With more than 500,000 visitors every year, the Birmingham Zoo is a top attraction in our state. Visitors can get a closer look at exotic species that are endangered across the globe as well as Alabama animals. With 750 animals representing 250 different species and six continents, this is a place to learn about conservation and have fun at the same time. If you haven’t made a visit lately, now is a great time to enjoy special activities. Feed the giraffes or take a ride on a camel. Get up close and personal with a Southern White Rhino, one of the largest mammals on the planet. Hop on the Red Diamond Express for a train’s-eye view of construction that is already under way and mark your 2011 calendar for a stroll through the Trails of Africa. Open 363 days a year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours May 29 through August 8 on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 7 p.m.
